Monday’s mind-set is all about success.
Without goals, we lack focus and direction. If we want success, then we need to set goals that allow us to take control of our life’s direction and provide ourselves with a benchmark for measuring that success.
The MindTools content team wrote five golden rules for goal setting and how to set yourself up for success:
1. Set Goals that Motivate You.
Make sure these goals are important to you and have value. If there is no relevance, then the chances of achieving these goals remain slim. These goals should relate to the high priorities in your life because without this type of focus there is a lack of commitment and a sense of urgency. Keep an “I must do this” attitude.
2. Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals.
Specific: Clear and well defined to help show the way. You can get to where you want to go by defining precisely where you want to end up.
Measurable: Your goals will be measured by your degree of success. Without it, you will miss out of the celebration that comes with knowing you achieved them.
Attainable: Set a goal you hope to achieve and resist the urge to make them too easy. “Raise the bar.”
Relevant: Goals should be relevant to the direction you want your life and career to take.
Time Bound: You must set a deadline. A sense of urgency increases and achievement will come more quickly.
3. Set Goals in Writing.
Use the word “will” instead of “would like to” or “might.” Post your goals in many visible places to remind yourself every day what you intend to do.
4. Make an Action Plan.
Don’t forget to provide yourself with a process of goal setting. Don’t get too focused on the outcome and forget to plan the steps that are needed along the way. Cross off each step to remind you that you are making progress toward your ultimate goal.
5. Stick With It!
Remind yourself to stay on track and review your goals along the way as they will always be an ongoing activity. Make sure the relevance, value, and necessity remain high.
